The Couchiching Conservancy Kicks Off Giving Tuesday with a challenge gift from Orillia Naturalists’ Club to Protect 430 Acres on Lake Dalrymple

The Couchiching Conservancy has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to permanently protect 430-acres of remarkable natural land on the shores of Lake Dalrymple, and protect Land for Life. To kick start this initiative, the Orillia Naturalists’ Club, executive and members have contributed towards this property, and are challenging the community to match their generosity on Giving Tuesday.

This property includes 1.9 km of the last undeveloped alvar shoreline on the lake, critical habitat for threatened and endangered species, and a unique ecosystem of global significance. Once protected, the property will feature a trail open to the public, allowing visitors to experience firsthand the rare habitats their support has helped preserve.

“This is the most significant conservation project we’ve ever undertaken,” Tanya Clark, Fundraising & Engagement Manager. “By protecting the Lake Dalrymple Alvar property, we’re safeguarding the last remaining undeveloped alvar shoreline, preserving vital wildlife habitat and protecting the near shoreline ecosystem. It’s a place where science, community, and nature come together in a powerful way. We are grateful to the Orillia Naturalists’ Club for contributing over $16,000 to the shared vision of blue lakes and rocky shores – protected forever.”

With a total project budget of $1.6 million, protecting the Lake Dalrymple property represents a defining moment in the Conservancy’s mission to create resilient, interconnected landscapes where both people and wildlife can thrive. Previous efforts have already established wildlife corridors and conserved vital habitats across the Couchiching region, and this project builds directly on that legacy. To date, the Conservancy has protected over 15,000-acres with partners. The protection of this new property will strengthen the ecological resilience of the Carden Alvar landscape and ensure that this rare and vibrant ecosystem remains intact forever.

Thanks to the Orillia Naturalists’ Club’s $16,000 lead gift, the community now has the opportunity to double the impact of their donations, with the knowledge of the club’s generosity on Giving Tuesday. This day is the world’s largest generosity movement, a day when everyone is encouraged to give back to the charities and non-profit organizations that matter to them most. This can be through monetary gifts, volunteering and spreading the word about the importance of this work.

“Together, we can make a lasting difference,” adds Denis Paccagnella, President of the Orillia Naturalists’ Club. “This is a chance for the community to join us in safeguarding one of the last, best examples of wild spaces in our care region. Your support today ensures these lands – and the wildlife they shelter – thrive for generations to come.”
