Hosted by Simcoe County Greenbelt Coalition (SCGC) and EROM, an Oro- Medonte focused group of citizens.
An interactive in-person event. Part of an SCGC initiative to co-host separate events across Simcoe County this spring with the hope of educating the public on the virtues of expanding greenbelt protections to other areas in Simcoe County.
April 27th will have a particular focus on the Oro Moraine, its biodiversity and its role in creating clean water. Many of its inhabitants know little about it. It is believed that a greenbelt designation would help against development pressures and other environmental risks.”

We will be gathering in the heart of his beloved Carden Alvar at the Carden Recreation Centre, 258 Lake Dalrymple Rd., Sebright. 2 – 5ish PM. We hope you will join to celebrate Ron’s legacy.
Ron passed away peacefully at his home in Washago, with Janet and his sons Peter and Alex by his side on Dec. 15, 2024. He lost his years-long battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis, but enjoyed his last years to the best his illness would permit – birding, land saving and even visiting Costa Rica.
Widely respected as an elder statesman of Natural Heritage protection in Ontario, Ron’s wisdom and guidance will be missed. He was very proud of having co-founded the Couchiching Conservancy which now protects over 15,000 acres, many of which he personally guided to protection.
An avid canoeist with Janet, his wife and partner of 45 years, Ron traveled dozens of northern rivers. Together they co-authored “Canoeing Ontario’s Rivers”.
Ron was a prolific writer and authored several other seminal works on land trusts and natural heritage protection, often with his long-time colleague, Dr. Stewart Hilts.

Ron requested donations be made to The Heartwood Fund of The Couchiching Conservancy in his memory. Visit our donation page and in the Donation Towards field, please select his name.
Accessibility: there is a wheelchair friendly entrance through the back of the building, but the ramp is fairly steep. Once inside the building, the doorways to the washrooms are a bit narrow. There are two sets of washrooms. The main space is all one level. There are at least six steps to the front door, and another ~6 steps up to the main space.

Join us for an informative session on different ways to create a legacy with a donation to The Couchiching Conservancy’s Heartwood Fund.
We will be joined by Chris Hazel, Vice President of The Community Foundation of Orillia & Area. They manage funds for 26 local charities, including the Conservancy. Chris will talk about endowment funds, managing risk for charities’ funds , the Foundation’s long-term investment philosophy. The key information will be how it applies to this very difficult and abruptly changing investment environment and how it relates to our Heartwood Fund.
Space is limited – RSVP to Tanya @ couchconservancy.ca (remove the spaces in email address)
