Landscape: Carden Alvar
This property has beautiful rolling meadows that gradually slope down to a willow thicket wetland which adjoins a cattail marsh. Generously donated to The Couchiching Conservancy by Ms. Judith Probst in memory of Ralph and Min McCleary.
Landscape and Species:
Two ponds were installed by Ducks Unlimited Canada in 2009 to attract wildlife species such as waterfowl, amphibians and reptiles.
The property is a breeding area for several species or bird and reptile including barn swallows who hunt these fields for insects. The profusion of common milkweeds attract monarch butterflies. Northern green orchis has also been found near the wetlands. Beaver and coyote are common on the property.
A small gate at the parking area allows access to the meadow area. There are no trails established. Use at your own risk.
From Orillia, follow Hwy 12 south continuing past Brechin and make a left onto County Road 48 (signs for Durham/Bolsover). It will turn into Portage Road, continue past Bolsover and make a right onto Prospect Rd. Look for a property sign and small gravel parking lot on your left.
