Are you looking for a fantastic free event for kids to get them out of the house and enjoying nature? If so, Nuts for Nature is for you!
The Couchiching Conservancy will be holding the 3rd “Nuts for Nature” family funfest at the Carden Recreation Centre this coming Sunday, June 11 from 9 am to 4 pm. The focus is on kids and their exposure to the natural world. Whether they like to have hands-on experiences, get artistic with arts and crafts or hike off their energy, there is something for everyone!
Thanks to our kind sponsors, all events and activities are free to take part in. You can register through the Conservancy’s website to let us know you and your family and friends are coming.
The drive to the Carden Recreation Centre displays the beauty of the area, with views of the alvar landscape and Lake Dalrymple. Start your day off by parking at the Carden Recreation Centre exploring the many booths and displays. There will be a horse drawn wagon ride to a pond study area at 10am followed by wagon rides all day long. You can build your own birdhouses and head downstairs afterwards to decorate it in the Nature Arts and Crafts Area. Here you can learn all about Bluebirds, Invasive Species and how to help.
[wc_row][wc_column size=”one-half” position=”first”]Next up are our important pollinators. It isn’t just adults who are concerned about bees. Young children hear about the issues pollinators are facing, they even learn about it on their cereal boxes. So why not talk to an expert, Jack and learn all about honey bees. You can even see a live hive in action! Then the kids can learn how to make a bee home for themselves and take home their new feeder to put in the yard and do their part.

[/wc_column][/wc_row]The Fair Glen Nature Group will be hosting a Nature Touch Table, this is fantastic for kids who like to touch and feel. Hikes, Safaris and a 1 pm Butterfly Walk with Dan and Susan will help all of us to learn about the special creatures who live in our region and that The Couchiching Conservancy provides a safe habitat for. For those with a need for speed, Kids for Turtles will be there with their racing turtle! And anyone with an interest in the night sky should try appreciating the daytime sky! Astronomer Bill will show you the sun with his solar telescope and tell you all about it.
For all of us who are interested in history, Ramara Artifacts will be there to show how life was in the good old days. Then if you feel inspired you can learn how to make a strong rope the old fashioned way!
Finally, if you get hungry Ginny’s Cafe will have delightful homemade sandwiches and goodies for sale around lunchtime, and Kawartha Dairy will have ice cream. All you have to do is show up and enjoy this wonderful natural world and promote environmental awareness for children.
The Nuts for Nature family funfest is a Couchiching Conservancy Passport to Nature event. The conservancy will have a booth available to tell you more about what they do and how you can participate in their endeavors. The Carden Recreation Centre is approximately 30 minutes east of Orillia on Lake Dalrymple Rd off of HW6. We hope to see you all there!
