All funds raised support the Angela Rehhorn Community Science Fund. Angela was born and raised in Orillia, Ontario. She was on her way to a career in marine biology when she became a volunteer with The Couchiching Conservancy in the winter of 2019, as part of the Canadian Conservation Corps program. Angela was passionate about protecting nature and was eager to make a difference in the community that raised her. She was selected as a Canadian Youth Delegate for the 2019 United Nations Environmental Assembly (UNEA) in Nairobi, Kenya and was on her way there when she fell victim in the crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 on March 10, 2019 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The Angela Rehhorn Community Science Fund was established in 2019 and provides critical on-going support to the Conservancy’s Community Science program. This year there are nine projects running, with over 200 volunteers involved. Projects include monitoring for bats, salamanders, reptiles, water quality and more. Volunteers are provided detailed training on their chosen project and then complete monitoring throughout the seasons at different nature reserves. All data is then compiled by Conservancy staff and reported back to volunteers. This data assists the Conservancy in numerous ways such as informing stewardship management decisions and areas for future land protection.
Roland Rehhorn and Joan Vincent, Angela’s parents, will be matching money raised from the event, to a maximum of $5,000. “Almost 5 years ago Angela was taken from us. Her path to Marine Biology was consistent at an early age. Her love of nature is undeniable and her influence lives within us each day. Partnering with the Couchiching Conservancy keeps her legacy alive by inspiring others and protecting habitats,” shared Roland and Joan. “The greatest gift you can give is the gift of love” and Angela gave our family that.
This fundraising dinner promises to be an evening filled with delectable food, community camaraderie, and a shared commitment to the environment. Guests will enjoy a gourmet dining experience featuring locally sourced ingredients, expertly prepared by Brewery Bay’s talented chefs. The menu will highlight the flavors of the region, emphasizing sustainability and seasonality.
Steve Clarke of Brewery Bay shared, “Couchiching Conservancy is making such a significant and timely difference in our region and when you add the wonderful legacy Angela triggered, we are quite excited to be hosting this meaningful fundraiser.”
Throughout the evening, attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about The Couchiching Conservancy’s conservation efforts and how their contributions can make a significant impact. There will also be a silent auction with a variety of unique items and experiences, with all proceeds directly benefiting the Conservancy’s work.
“We are delighted to partner with Brewery Bay for this special fundraising dinner,” said Dorthea Hangaard, Executive Director of The Couchiching Conservancy. “Our community’s support is crucial in our ongoing efforts to protect and preserve the natural landscapes that make our region so exceptional. We invite everyone to join us for a memorable evening of good food, good company, and a shared commitment to conservation.”
