Ironside Nature Reserve

Size: 300-acres (120-hectares)

Status: Not Open to the Public

Protected: March 21, 2012

Background:

This nature reserve is a 120 hectare (300 acre) property located in Severn Township in an area known locally as Matchedash. The property is located within The Land Between, which has been identified as a ‘hotspot’ for biodiversity. The Land Between is recognized as the contact zone where the Paleozoic limestone of the south meets the granite shield of the north, where many southern species are at their northern affinity and northern species are at the southern extent of their range. The larger Land Between area creates a band from Georgian Bay in the west to Kingston in the east, sustains an estimated 50 aquatic and terrestrial species at risk, several of which can be found on the easement.
