With the return of the monarch butterfly, begins t With the return of the monarch butterfly, begins the start of the monarch monitoring season for the Couchiching Conservancy community science program. Monarchs are Endangered in Canada, and face various threats across their range including habitat loss, pollution (herbicides and insecticides), extreme weather, and disease. Our monarch monitoring program gathers information on monarchs and milkweed patches at local nature reserves. To contribute to research on a larger scale, we share our data with other organizations such as Mission Monarch and the Natural Heritage Information Centre. To collect the data, trained volunteers survey their assigned milkweed patches monthly from June to August. They inspect milkweed plants and tally the number of monarch eggs, caterpillars, chrysalises, and butterflies. This provides evidence of monarch breeding, and gives a snapshot of monarch populations in the patch overtime. Monarch caterpillars undergo five distinct stages of growth known as instars, with each stage characterized by specific size and appearance. When volunteers encounter a caterpillar, they use a specialized ruler to help them determine the instar. This June, monarch monitors surveyed 4 different milkweed patches at nature reserves protected by the Couchiching Conservancy. A total of 11 eggs, 1 caterpillar and 2 adult monarch butterflies were reported. 🐛🦋 Head to our website to read the full blog post by our Conservation Analyst, Aiesha Aggarwal!

A dreamy night for frog monitoring in the Carden A A dreamy night for frog monitoring in the Carden Alvar🌞✨🌙 Did you know? Our frog monitoring program has 35 volunteers that monitor stations at 18 different nature reserves/easements between April and June. There are one toad and nine frog species in our region, and volunteers are trained to identify their calls both individually and in a chorus. Volunteers are given access to a playlist of reference frog calls that they can listen to (with headphones) to verify calls. Here's Madeleine, Haven, and Jade during their May monitoring visit. Join us in thanking long-time volunteers Mary and Join us in thanking long-time volunteers Mary and Omer Mick as they step down from their positions. They have been the team leaders at Grant's Woods Nature Reserve since the Conservancy acquired the property, checking on the trails, even sweeping the needles and leaves off of the bridges so people wouldn't slip. They also were water quality monitors and helped in many other ways. We are so grateful for their years of service and support!
